Scene of the month: December 2014 - "Jaws"
Every great action-adventure or horror film needs a "calm before the storm" scene right before reaching its climax, and Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws', arguably one of the best films ever made, has its calm before the storm in the form of its lead trio, Brody, Hooper and Quint, comparing battle scars on their boat, just before the climactic shark attack that ends in "Smile, you son of a bitch!" There is humour in this scene, as while Hooper and Quint have serious injuries, Brody has only an old appendix scar to bring to the table, so he remains quiet. But there is also some heavy emotion, as Quint recounts his horrifying experiences on the USS Indianapolis in a well-written monologue that is engaging to the audience, right before losing his life to the great white.
